Al-Muta'ali is the Self-Exalted — the One who transcends every concept, every description, every limit, and every comparison that creation can offer, exalting Himself above all of it by His own inherent nature. The prefix muta- indicates that this exaltation is self-derived: He is not elevated by praise, not made greater by worship, not diminished by those who reject or deny Him. Al-Muta'ali is the name that reminds the believer: your theology and language about God, however sophisticated and sincere, remain infinitely beneath the reality of who He is. The greatest theologian and the greatest mystic are both standing before Al-Muta'ali in equal incomprehension — and that incomprehension, properly held, is itself a form of knowledge.
