Ad-Darr is the One who allows harm and affliction to reach whom He wills — and this is among the most challenging of the beautiful names to sit with. Islam teaches that nothing harms any soul without divine permission, which means every difficulty, every loss, every pain was known, permitted, and ultimately purposeful. Ad-Darr is always paired with An-Nafi' (the Benefactor) — harm and benefit flow from the same source, are governed by the same wisdom, and serve the same ultimate goal. The harm that Ad-Darr permits is never pointless: it purifies, it tests, it strengthens, it redirects, or it is the consequence of a moral choice. The believer who truly knows Ad-Darr is freed from blaming anyone else for their pain.
