Al-Hafiz is the Preserver who guards and protects all of creation with perfect precision and total attention — preserving the Quran from alteration, preserving the heavens and earth from collapse, and preserving each soul from the harms that are not decreed for it. The root h-f-z (حفظ) means to guard, to memorize, to protect from loss — a memorizer of the Quran is a hafiz, one who carries the preservation of the divine word. The Quran tells us the angels appointed to each person are Hafazah — guardians — who 'follow one another, before him and behind him, preserving him by the command of Allah.' Al-Hafiz does not miss a single thing that needs protecting, and no harm reaches you without passing through His permission.
