Al-Kabir is the Most Great — a greatness so total and all-encompassing that comparing any created greatness to it is like comparing a single candle to all the light of every star that has ever existed. The root k-b-r (كبر) does not merely mean 'large' — it means a greatness of such magnitude that it cannot be contained within any frame of reference. Every time we say 'Allahu Akbar' (Allah is greater), we are not saying He is great — we are saying He is greater than whatever greatness you just imagined, whatever situation you are in, whatever fear or hope or aspiration fills your heart. The phrase is an infinite sentence: no matter what you put in the comparison, He is always greater.
