Al-Hayy is the Ever-Living — life is not something He was given or acquired, but something essential to His very nature, without beginning, without end, and without the possibility of diminishment. Every living thing in creation borrowed its life from Al-Hayy, exists in a temporary state of aliveness, and will return that borrowed life at death — but Al-Hayy's life is the permanent original from which all life flows. The great Name of Allah that the Prophet ﷺ described as the one by which, when invoked, He responds, includes Al-Hayy Al-Qayyum together — the Ever-Living Self-Subsisting. Calling on Al-Hayy in the darkest moments is calling on the source of all life to revive what has grown cold in you.
