The Self Existing

Al-Qayyum is the Self-Subsisting — the One who not only sustains His own existence independently but upon whom all of creation depends for its continued existence in every moment. The word Qayyum (قيّوم) comes from a root meaning to stand firm, to maintain, to uphold — and Al-Qayyum is the cosmic upholding power without which everything would instantly cease to exist. The Quran says: 'Allah — there is no deity except Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of existence. Neither drowsiness overtakes Him nor sleep.' His sustaining of creation is not an occasional intervention but a continuous act: every atom in the universe is being held in existence by Al-Qayyum at every moment. Nothing exists independently of Him, not for a single instant.
