As-Samad is the Eternal Refuge — the One upon whom all creation depends absolutely, who Himself depends on nothing, who is the ultimate destination of all need, all aspiration, all longing, and all supplication. The Quran pairs Al-Ahad with As-Samad in Surah Al-Ikhlas — the unique One is also the eternal refuge, pointing to the connection between His absolute singularity and His absolute sufficiency. As-Samad has been described by scholars as the master to whom all requests ultimately reach. Every human longing — for love, for meaning, for security, for beauty, for home — finds its true destination in As-Samad, and every other destination is a proxy that can only partially and temporarily approximate the real thing.
