Al-Qadir is the Omnipotent — completely capable of doing anything He wills, at any moment, without any limitation, instrument, preparation, or constraint of any kind. The distinction between Al-Qadir and Al-Qawi is in the emphasis: Al-Qawi speaks of the strength He possesses; Al-Qadir speaks of the power He exercises — the active capacity to bring about whatever He intends. The Quran returns to this name over 40 times, often following descriptions of natural phenomena or human situations that seem impossible to change: 'Do they not see? Indeed Allah is over all things competent.' When a situation appears completely fixed and beyond any possibility of change, Al-Qadir is the reminder that you are only observing the surface of a reality that has dimensions you cannot see.
