Al-Batin is the Hidden — the One who is concealed from direct perception, beyond all sensory experience and all imaginative construction, more hidden than the most hidden thing, and yet closer to you than your own heartbeat. The Quran places Al-Batin immediately alongside Az-Zahir as a single description of the same Reality — the same Being is simultaneously completely evident and completely concealed. This apparent paradox is the heart of the mystical understanding of God in Islamic thought: He is found precisely by looking past the surface of the visible world to the hidden presence sustaining it all. When the search for God through the visible world leaves you feeling there is something just beyond the reach of perception — that feeling itself is the nearness of Al-Batin.
