Al-'Afuww is the Pardoner — from 'a-f-a (عفا) meaning to erase completely, to obliterate traces, to pardon so thoroughly that it is as if the sin never occurred at all. The distinction from Al-Ghafur (who covers sins) is profound: Al-Ghafur conceals the sin; Al-'Afuww erases it. The Prophet ﷺ taught the most famous prayer of Laylat al-Qadr: 'O Allah, You are Al-'Afuww, You love to pardon, so pardon me.' This supplication was given specifically for the Night of Power — the most sacred night of the year for forgiveness — revealing that the ultimate prayer of that night is the erasure of sins, not merely their covering. Al-'Afuww does not just forgive — He deletes.
