Al-Baqi is the Everlasting — the One who remains when all else has ceased, whose existence has no end as it has no beginning, who outlasts the universe and every created thing in it. The Quran repeatedly contrasts the fana' (passing away) of all creation with the baqa' (remaining) of Allah: 'Everyone on it will perish, and there will remain the Face of your Lord, Owner of majesty and honor.' Al-Baqi is the profound answer to the grief of losing everything — and every human being eventually faces that grief. But the One who remains when everything is gone is not less after the loss; He is what was always there, what all the temporary things were pointing toward. Al-Baqi waits at the end of every goodbye.
