Al-Badi' is the Incomparable Originator — the One who creates in ways that have no precedent, no model, no prior example: each creative act is entirely original, unprecedented, and incomparably novel. The root b-d-' (بدع) is the same root as bid'ah (innovation) — but while human innovation always builds upon what came before, Al-Badi's origination is from nothing and like nothing. Every creature that exists is an original design never before conceived — the billions of faces that have ever existed, the infinite variety of life forms, the uniqueness of every snowflake — all are expressions of Al-Badi' whose creativity does not repeat and does not run out. When human creativity finds its source, it is drawing, consciously or not, from the infinite originality of Al-Badi'.
