Al-Ghaffar comes from the root gh-f-r (غفر) — related to the Arabic word for helmet or covering — meaning the One who covers, conceals, and repeatedly forgives sins as if they never existed. The emphatic form Ghaffar (فعّال) indicates repetition and abundance: this is not a one-time forgiveness but a continuous, inexhaustible covering of sins every time the servant returns. The Prophet ﷺ taught that Allah says: 'O son of Adam, if your sins reached the clouds of the sky and then you asked Me for forgiveness, I would forgive you.' Al-Ghaffar does not tire of forgiving. No matter how many times you have returned broken and ashamed, this name assures you: He will cover your sins again.
