Dhul-Jalal wal-Ikram — the Possessor of Majesty and Generosity — combines into a single Name two qualities that exist in perfect tension and perfect harmony: the awesome, transcendent majesty that inspires reverence and awe, and the tender, overflowing generosity that invites and embraces. The Prophet ﷺ said: 'Recite frequently Ya Dhal-Jalali wal-Ikram' — elevating this compound name to special prominence in daily remembrance. A God of only majesty without generosity would be terrifying but not loveable; a God of only generosity without majesty would be intimate but without reverence. In Dhul-Jalal wal-Ikram, the believer has both simultaneously: the One before whom they bow in awe is the very same One who calls them near in love.
